Part 3 of a 3-Part Series on Finding Meaning and Stability in Uncertain Times
In the first post of this series, we explored why it can feel so hard to reach out for support when everything feels overwhelming, and why connection matters.
In the second, we talked about protecting your mind from constant noise and information overload.
But even with support…even with boundaries…there’s often a deeper question that lingers:
“How do I move forward when the future feels so uncertain?”
When Uncertainty Shakes Our Sense of Meaning
As a therapist, I often see that what people struggle with most in uncertain times isn’t just anxiety: it’s loss of clarity. The future feels harder to picture, plans feel less solid and motivation can drop.
You might notice thoughts like:
“What’s the point?”
“Everything feels unpredictable.”
“I don’t know what I’m working toward anymore.”
This isn’t a personal failure; instead, it’s what happens when the ground beneath us feels unstable. As humans, we rely on a sense of direction and meaning to feel anchored, and when that’s disrupted, it can create a quiet but powerful form of distress.
Meaning Doesn’t Have to Come From the Future
In stable times, we often build meaning from long-term goals:
career plans
milestones
future achievements
big-picture life direction
But in uncertain times, meaning often needs to shift. Instead of coming from the distant future, it can come from:
how we show up today
how we care for others
how we respond to challenges
what we choose to value, even now
In other words:
Meaning becomes something we practice, not something we wait for.
Small Moments Still Matter (More Than You Think)
When the world feels unstable, it’s easy to overlook small, everyday moments, but these moments are often where meaning quietly lives:
checking in on a friend
sharing a conversation
showing up for your family
doing something creative
taking care of your own well-being
These actions may seem small, but they are how we rebuild a sense of purpose in real time.
Hope Isn’t Always a Feeling
There’s a common idea that hope is something you either have…or don’t. In reality, hope is often something we create through action.
Especially in uncertain times, you don’t have to feel hopeful to:
reach out to someone
take a small step forward
care for yourself
contribute to your community
Sometimes, the action comes first, and the feeling follows later.
Hope is often built, not found.
The Role of Community in Finding Meaning
Meaning is rarely created in isolation; it grows through connection, shared experience, and being witnessed by others. This is why community matters not just for support: but for purpose.
When we come together, we:
make sense of what we’re going through
feel less alone in our fears
remind each other what matters
find strength we didn’t know we had
This is also why I’ve been exploring the idea of offering free online support groups. Spaces where people can:
talk openly about uncertainty
share what they’re navigating
support one another in real time
reconnect with a sense of meaning and grounding
If this is something you’d be interested in, I’d truly love to hear from you.

This Is a Marathon: Not a Moment
If there’s one thing many people are feeling right now, it’s this: this isn’t a short-term challenge. It’s an ongoing stretch of uncertainty, and that requires a different kind of care. Not urgency or constant productivity, and not having all the answers...but sustainable ways of coping, connecting, and finding meaning along the way.
A Small Reflection for Today
Take a moment to ask yourself:
“What feels meaningful to me right now, even in a small way?”
Not in the future or someday, but today: let that be enough.
Bringing It All Together
Across this 3-part series, we’ve explored:
why overwhelm can make it hard to reach out, and why support matters
how to protect your mind from constant information overload
how to reconnect with meaning, even when the future feels unclear
If there’s one thread that runs through all of it, it’s this:
You don’t have to navigate uncertain times alone.
A Final Invitation
If you’ve been feeling the weight of everything lately, consider this an open invitation:
To connect, talk and to be part of something shared.
I’m in the process of organizing free online community support groups for those who want a space to navigate this together.
